Default 76k Miles, Fluid Change Yes or No?

Hey guys,

I am fixing to put a cam in soon and was wondering if maybe I should change my tranny fluid and filter before I do it. I bought this car with 48k miles and have no previous knowledge on the transmission maintenance. At around 55k or so I put in a transmission cooler and have been keeping it at the proper level since. Do you think that I am to far down the road to start changing the fluid? I don't want to change it and then a week later the tranny falls apart on me because the old fluid was all that is holding it together. What do you'll think? I checked the color of the fluid today by comparing it to clean fluid and it looked kinda dirty but it could've just been from the dipstick. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

I have changed mine 4 times (at least) and only have
28,000 miles. My opinion is that this trans needs all
the love it can get.

If you change it cross your fingers ......they have been known to fail after changing fluid with lots of miles on them....

I had an old tranny start slipping after changing the fluid ... but at 76,000, I'd think you're ok. I would go ahead and do it soon. If it were 126,000, I'd say leave it.

Check the fluid, is it ruined? If not change it, it'll need a new filter too.

I have 48k and change my fluid/filter once or twice a year depending on how much I race it.

The owners manual does not even suggest chaning it untill 50k, as most car owners go your right on par for changing it. Change it an don't look back, it'll be best for your trans.

Alright, I am going to go ahead and change it. Do you have to replace that seal that the filter fits into or can you reuse it? I have heard its a pain to get out and don't want to risk messing up the sleeve. What do you'll think?

If you're talking about the oring on the filter tube, yeah, change it. I always get them out with a pick hook, the one with the 45 degree angle works well, just don't scrape the hell out of the surrounding metal. Not too hard to get out, though, and sometimes it will come out with the filter anyways.
