Default How much can the stock 4L60 take

What is the max HP people are seeing with the stock tranny? I have 405rwhp, 395 rwtq and want to add a 100 TNT shot to it. At the track I will wait to engage after the 60' going about 35 mph. Can my stock tranny take it?

If it takes it, it probably won't be for long!

GM rated these things as handling 350- maybe 400HP tops.

I agree, I went through a couple before I got one "built right" with just around 400 hp... It doesn't seem they can take any abuse without the top 2 gears going out on me.

I'll give your tranny about 10 or less passes and then she will lose some of the gears, especially with the N2O.

always heard 450 is the max a stocker can take. Some will go out much sooner and lower power like other people have posted..

all depends, mine has 94,000 miles on it and i put a cam in at 91,000 that brought it up 360rwhp and 355rwtq and right now it is have the tranny built because as soon as i put the cam in it started to slip and hit the rev limiter in first, then 4th started to slip also.

Who builds a 4l60 to handle 800 - 900 rwhp?

I have 100s of trips down the track, cutting anywhere from 1.6s to 1,8s 60' with no problem with my tranny. I never try to manually shift it. When you do that, it doesn't allow enough line pressure to build to make the upshift when you try to go to a higher gear. That is why there is a delay when you manually up shift. This is NOT good on the tranny. Also I have a good tune with my 4000 stall converter and have a little more line pressure to help keep it from slipping. All of this on with 405 rwhp and 395 rwtq.

My tranny went boom when I tried to hit it off the line with a TNT 100 shot. I am guessing it had close to 600 ft-lb of torque when it happen. I believe the main thing that caused it was severe wheel hop. It is now rebuilt with a few upgraded parts, but still not a completely beefed up tranny.

We have added QA1 shocks and relocation bracket for the LCA to help eliminate wheel hop.

I would still like to see what it would do on the track with a 100 shot, but I will NOT try to hit it off the line again. Since I NEVER had a problem before I tried the nitrous on the line, I am thinking, if I wait until after the 60' mark before I "hit" the button. and not spray during the shift using the MSN window switch, what are my chances for this to hold up?

horsepower does not matter to a tranny as much as RWTQ. the guy that i went to has a car that i know of that is running a 150 shot and hits 700 RWTQ and hes has been running the tranny for about a year and has not hit the rev limiter once. but if you are going to run 800-900 then i would advise to go with a built 200r-4 tranny.
