Default How to replace rear tranny seal?

I was quoted $169 to do it so I just bought the $2 piece myself. My question is, what do I need to know in order to do it? This is an A4 from a 1998 Trans Am. Any help and pointers greatly appreciated as I can't find instructions in the shop manual.

are you talking about the one that the driveshaft goes through. If so all you need is a seal puller, dont have one no problem. A blade screwdriver works also. Simply take the drive shaft out, slide the screw driver under the seal and pry it out. To install lightly tap then new seal to get it started, place a block of wood over the seal and hit the wood with a hammer, this way you dont screw up the seal with the hammer. Re install drive shaft and your done.. 10min job once the car is up on stands.

BubaGump, thanks! Do I need to do anything else to the Driveshaft? Also, do I need to lube the seal at all?

Thats good advice but you can't put a block of wood over the seal because the output shaft sticks out of it.

Whatever you do, don't put a screwdriver between the tail housing and seal to pry, it'll break the tail housing.

Once you get the seal out apply some grease to the inside of it where the yoke rides, you'll need a socket or piece of pipe to get over the output shaft and tap it in place.

good advice jxaxsxoxn, forgot about the shaft sticking out. You can also heat up the housing with propane to make the seal removal easier.

Never thought of that, I'll try that one of these days.

yea, aluminum expands faster than steal. I use this everyday at work to get bearings out of housings in power tools. Hell sometimes the bearings just fall out if you heat it up enough and its still hot enough to drop in the new bearings. You can also put the seal in the freezer to shrink it a bit to make it go in easier..

Unbolt the rear of the D/S, pull it out of the trans. Remove the old seal, carefully tap the new one in a little at a time while working around the seal. OK it's not going well, one side pops out when you tap the opposite side. Take a break and have some refreshment and start over more determined. Time it should take: 15 minutes. Actual time including refreshment and mental readjustment: 35 minutes if on ground (hard to reach refreshment), 15 minutes if on lift.

Luck,
Gerald
