Default What STR do you have Poll

Looking to upgrade my 3,000stall 2.0str midwest converter for something in the 3,500-3,800 stall and trying to decide on what str. My current stall is a pain in the *** to hook even on nittos. Was looking at something sub 2.0 so its easier to launch but i heard as stall goes up it becomes easier to launch with the same str. So a 4,000 stall 2.0str converter would be easier to launch than my 3,000stall 2.0str..Would that be right.. Just want to get this next converter to be what i really want and not roast the tires just giving it 1/4 throttle

Also what tires do you have(street, drag radial,et street etc)

I have a 3000stall with a 2.1 str. My best 60' is 1.84 with M/T et streets. I have no problem launching but my car only runs a 13.4

3000/2.0STR Fuddle here on my Monaro. Consistently low 1.7X 60' with a best of 1.71s. NA, unopened, bolt-on modifications only plus tune on MT ET DRs.

Im no converter expert, but since this is internet science, IMO, you will be lucky to find any converter multiply torque more than x2 as its the physical nature of the reverse stator flow. You may find higher STR spikes with a 2.5STR, say, over a 2.0STR, but that spike would only last for a brief moment in time, whereas the lower STR will multiply torque for a longer period of time. The overall nett result is the same torque multiplication over the same RPM band.

Granted, a higher STR will hit more instantaneously off the line for those cars that want big HP launches. But for streeters, a lower STR is generally better for traction and cruising. Dont go too low, though, or it will feel too soggy and flashy. Go too high, and you will need more revs to move at the same speed due to decreasing efficiencies.

I was having a LOT of traction problems, so this past winter I did two things. I got a set of Nitto drag radials for the rear and I swapped out my Yank 3000/1.9 STR converter for a Yank SY3500/1.63. Now, even at my power level, I'm cutting low 1.70's/high 1.60's on Nittos and running in the mid to low 11's.

thanx trooper, talked to you in the past about the converter but i always heard that an str that low would be soggy. Im not too concerned with soggy cause i can always get gears.

I have a Yank SS3800 with a 2.55 STR. Its hard to launch in on the street with street tires, but with a good tire behind it, the car moves.

Yank ST3500 2.5 STR. Stock 16" wheels with 245/50s. Will not hook from a dead stop without feathering the gas, and that's with 2.73's. My converter has been a good one (over 70K miles so far) but I would like to get a lower STR some day.

Yank ST3800/2.5.... i love drag racing with my 2.73 rear. I think if I could do it over again in the future I'd go with a 2.6-2.7

Fuddle 3800 2.5str, MT DRs 15", A4, 3450lbs, on NA ran 11.791 @ 113 with a shitty 1.64 short time. Far better then the Yank 3000 stall was. Next will be some nitrous runs, but need to be conservative since the TC was built for a turbo app, and is being sold to such. Next TC will be a 4000 2.5str, for nitrous

Yeah, heard from people that have never owned this converter.

I do have 3.73 gears, but in any case, I'd call a 1.69 on drag radials anything but "soggy."

TCI 4000/2.8. Not a chance on street tires. I sprayed the car off at one of those car wash places last night, and leaving the parking lot, barely accelerating, the car got sideways. If you want to hook, you'll need much less STR and even then the stall is going to make it a chore unless you're on good tires.

i know the stall is going to make it hard to launch going full throttle but a stall with a lower str should be easier to feather it out of the hole than a converter with a higher str.

Even a 1.8 will make it hard to get traction on your average LS1. I have a 2.2 and will leave black strips at will.

So with a Z06 cam and 3.73's its best to go with a lower STR right\/
