Default Automatic vs 6 speed Standard

I do not currently own an F-body camaro or firebird but I am going to purchase one. I have two cars in which I have narrowed my search down too. Both are 1999 Camaro Z-28 T-tops. One has 27k miles and is an automatic. The other has 71k miles and is a fully loaded 6 speed standard. What are the benefits of the 6 speed? The fully loaded camaro is only 500 more than the other so the price is nearly the same. Which of the two would you suggest?

That is what I was thinking. Especially in the heavy traffic I tend to get stuck in. But for some reason a 6 speed standard just calls my name. A plus to the standard is I could squeeze a bit better gas mileage out of the car. But anything sure beats my car I drive now. It only gets 12mpg hwy and 10mpg city. Eventually I'd be doing some engine mods. One of the three to start with. LS2 conversion, Turbo, or Supercharged. With the extra hp and torque which transmission would be the best bet? I know the lower mileage motor would be a better start for making a higher output motor.

A beefed up auto with a big stall would be real bad ***. and could handle most of what u throw at it

The manual tranny car will probably squeeze 3-4 more miles out of a gallon of gas. However, if you drag race often, you'll love the ease at which the auto will let you get down the track. Add a stall, some gears and some sticky tires and just head out and mash the gas to a low 13/high 12 second pass. Those times can also be achieved with the manual but it just takes more work, driving wise. Also, the lower mileage car is definitely the better one to start modding and keep.

I'd go with the A4 if it had less mileage. Sure you don't get that manual fun factor, but you can certainly make an auto more fun, and with a stall, even better than a manual as far as ETs are concerned.

Plus A4s are easier on the rear, something the M6 guys are capable of breaking stock.

Is the 3600 stall still good for gas mileage or does it affect it at all. Is a 2600 stall good for performance and every day driving?

The automatic A4 transmission in the late model firebird/camaro is great for an automatic, it shifts fast, smooth in regular driving, and has that hard M/T feel under heavy throttle. Go auto, especially considering the mileage difference.

your first question depends on if the stall has a lockup, and what speed it's set to. the stock TC will lock up at 40mph and low rpm, a lot of aftermarket ones don't. but this is pretty much set in the tune. Regardless of the lockup in town tho, they lock up on the highway just fine.

Short answer: you'll notice a drop in mileage in city driving, but highway mileage will stay the same. "streetability" is different for everyone, but i imagine a 3600 would be very streetable, given that there's a lot of daily drivers around with 4k stalls. but that's pushing it.

a 2600 stall is practically useless, anything lower than a 3k i would not recommend. 3200+ is usually a good idea.

I'd go for the low miles a4. Thats how I ended up with my car, it was practically new which is why i chose it, even with the auto.
