Default 74 TH350 tailshaft bushing problem maybe?

Hi,
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, first time posting.
I have a 74 Esprit with a TH350. The car is all original with 58K miles on it. I have a noise that is progressively getting worse. I thought it was a U-joint, but the front and back U-joints are tight and seem like they are in very good shape. The noise was originally only when coasting in drive..it would go away if I downshited to 2nd manually, or got on the gas and put a load on the driveline. There is vertical/horisontal play when you push the slipyoke up and down with a "clunk" that sounds like it might be the noise when the driveshaft is spinning. It doesn't leak though.
So...I guess my question is..is this the slipyoke bushing in the tailshaft? From what I've found online the parts to fix it are cheap, but I haven't figured out if I need to do a rebuilt on the transmission (which is in great shape other than the noise) or if I can get away with fixing it in the car.
Any advise is appreciated.
