Default TH400 sometimes barely moves in reverse?

I have a RMVB th400 with around 2000 miles on it, and I have noticed that when I try to go on reverse on a slight uphil, and I mean very slight, it barely moves, just revs and slips very badly. But if the surface is level, it moves fine, but not great. I know that the car doesn't make a lot of vacum in reverse with my G5X4 cam, and the 3800 stall isn't helping, but it doesn't seem right. Basically this th400 is ment for 1/4 racing, so I am thinking that might be the reason..

Hey Jimmy hows it going?

I have a TCI TH400 and mine does the same thing. It dosen't feel right... like you need to rev it a lot and then it just kicks in real hard. I thought something was wrong, but since you mentioned it, it must just be part of the animal.

BTW check your PM's

Yes I have a trans-brake but it isn't hooked up and hasn't been used.

I've noticed it does it more-so when cold.

It drives around and shifts great. I have all gears.

Default rev

sounds like the rev. band has the wrong apply pin. or the band is dead.

I dont have a trans brake, and 3rd gear works perfectly. John, maybe that allison screen your sending me will fix it?

Mine doesn't realy rev and then kick in hard, it just revs and the car barely moves. Then if I put it in drive, and move a couple of feet forward quickly, and put it in reverse, it seems to move a little better.
I dont realy mind it at all..I'm just worried that it will get worse and reverse wont work at all.

Tony, Its going prety good, and yourself? What type of converter do you have in it? Maybe its a TCi issue. My converter is a TCi, but the trans was built my Dean at DRC.
I PM'ed you back.

I am guessing something like that can't be fixed by dropping the pan. Probably needs a whole rebuild right?
Would it get worse, or will it still function the way it is now?
I can't remember if it was doing this when I first got the trans installed. There aren't a lot of situations when I have to reverse when im on a slight up hill.

Default pin

jim, l'm still trying to help you save money here. the rear servo pins come in a family of lenghts. if yours is to short the servo will bottom before the pin can apply the band. if you are brave enough to remove the vb and then the rear servo and tell me how many rings are on the pin l'll send you a longer one. john

Update on this. Had the trans opened up and inspected by a trans guy for a couple of reasons. He informed me the rear band was all worn out. A bit odd as the trans has about 2000 miles on it.

Default band

jim, your trans man must have a tool that tells him how long the apply pin must be. again you may have to use your t brake to have a good rev. there are tbvbs that don't need to use the brake for rev

Hey John,
I went to the shop that originaly built the trans so I can get some gaskets/seals, a rear band, and a trans brake. He told me he will give me a stock rear band as the high performance ones were burning out easily.
The trans didn't have a trans brake before, but it will now. Its a Hipsters Brake. Do you know if I need to use the trans brake to get a good rev out of it? I will take these parts to my trans guy and have him put it in, and I will ask him to make sure the apply pin for the rear band is the right lengh.
