Did you hook the linkage back up? With the car safely supported, have someone move the shifter back n forth through the gears and see if the linkage arm on the trans moves. There is disconnect on the cable that is easily broken and will let you pull it back to R, and then D, but going back nope.
If you mean you put it in gear and you roll in 1st, but then no shifting to second...beats me.

Did you check ALL the fuses? they pop on occasion with a trans in and out.
Also i know u said u checked the case connector but there maybe a bent or broken pin. plus,if you push too hard on the case conn. it starts to go into the trans and sometimes doesn't make a good conn.
