My fathers 98 z28 is stuck in park. What could be causing this and how can we fix this problem. The car will start fine but we can not push the button in on the shifter to change gears.

Prolly already tried, but if not, try rocking the car whil depressing the button and pulling firmly on the handle (Brake depressed enough to release the override).

If this doesn't work, might have to replace the safety switch

Remove the console top and unplug the brake interlock solenoid.

I have already tried rocking the car and disconnecting the battery. Neither of those helped.

How can you remove the upper panel when the shifter is stuck in park. I have tried and there is not enough room because the shifter is pointed to far forward. Is there something that I am missing. Thanks for the quick replies

****, you're right ... I guess it would be a matter of contorting your body out the passenger footwell and trying to dig out the staple with a needlenose pliers ... I'd go check if it's even possible, but my car's not here ... good luck, man.
