Default Couple dumb Qs that I cant find answers for.

I hear a lot of talk about stall converters etc. I know that it is a tq converter but how exactly does it work? Ive heard different levels of stall, 3000 3800 etc. I mean I realize that it does literally "stall" but can someone explain how it works? Also are they for autos only or can they be used with M6 as well?

im really sure how they work but there only used for M4's aka automatics

You should check the Automatic Forum. To answer your question quickly, a torque converter is also called a 'stall.' They mount where a clutch would mount on a M6. Think of them like two fans facing each other. When you turn one fan on, it will spin the other. Simply put, converters do the same, but they use trans fluid instead of air. The stall rating is refering to the rpm the motor will spin when under heavy load until the drivetrain catches up. In other words, a manual will connect the motor to the tires when the clutch is engaged. Autos never really connect the motor to the tires unless they are a lock-up style and the torque converter clutch is engaged. So, when I put my A4 in second & floor it from a dead stop (assuming not tire spin), my motor will spin at ~3200rpm until the drivetrain catches up and then the rpms will rise until redline. It's like slipping the clutch in a manual and never letting it lock fully. Converters also have a 'Stall Torque Ratio' (STR). This is what determines how hard the converter hits. A lower STR won't hit as hard as a higher one. Hope that helps some...

ok....stalls are only for a automatic transmission...stall refers to how much rpm ur motor will go before it starts spinning the rear tires.....on a stock car whenyou step on the brake and hit the gas(in drive) the motor will only rev up to about 1500 rpm...with a stall it allows you to let the motor rev higher before the rear tires start to move....stall converter and slicks will drop your 1/4 mile time by almost a second...i have a friend with a 4000 stall...373gears and slicks running 12.1 1/4 mile with omly those mods so a stall is deffinately worth it!!!!!!! any other questiions??? did i explain it well enough???

Check out some of the verter websites, they have detailed info on this. If I remember correctly, TCI has a good write up.

So having an A4 with a stall is better htan having an M6?

If you have a "stall" converter in your car the engine won't stall if you do a neutral drop, because the converter will carry the power to the tranny

Supposedly. If you hook its a pretty kickass launch from what I hear.

depends on your defination of "better". goes back to beating a dead horse with all the a4 vs m6 threads. you couldnt give me a 10 second stallled 4l60e.

i would take my stalled car over a M6 anyday of the week. there are lots of good threads about this out there. Just search around and you will find the info your looking for.
