Trans temp sender placement

Trans temp sender placement
I've got my trans temp sender in the port right above the shift linkage. I think this is where lots of people put them to avoid drilling the pan. Is anybody getting accurate temp readings with the sender in this location? Obviously it's not as good as in the pan, but is it good enough? I drove the car for the first time today since putting the gauge in and although it was barely above freezing outside, the trans temp barely went above 100*F. Sound right for stock converter?

yes, thats about right. I installed the sensor in the service port and notice it barley gets to 120 when its 20* out(i got an extra large trans cooler too). I installed min late summer and temps were around 165* and checked it with auto tap and it was the same temp.

I have mine in the pressure test port and it reads almost the exact temp as datamaster reports.
Sending unit would depend on gauge. For a short sweep electric gauge most of the time the correct sender is part # 2258.

i have my sender inline with the exit port of the trans that goes to the radiator, in a t style fitting trans is alot hotter than 100 though you should think about putting it there, that is where the hottest reading will come, right after it exits the converter.

if you are under the car the line that is towards the driverside near the trans. after the lines come down from the trans ans flattenout and follow the floor it is the driverside line. that is where i put my t block with sender

I think i got the t from menards, they didn't have 2 3/8's or 5/16's holes(i can't remember what the size of the lines are??) and a 1/4in for the sender. So i had to get a 1/4 all the way around T then get to conveters from 1/4 to 5/16or3/8(cannot remember again). The sender went in the 1/4 inside and the top of the t was for the trans line

I bought my T at Ace Hardware, but anyone who has brass fittings should have one. I have a 1/8" NPT sender and in order to keep it from blocking the flow I bought a 1/4" T and a reducing bushing to go to 1/8". I am going to use 1/4" to 5/16" compression fittings to connect it to the lines, but I think that f-bodies use 3/8" line instead of 5/16" I will post pics when I assemble it.

Don`t worry about trying to squeeze under the car, I`m not in a rush, everythings stock so I don`t think I have to worry about overheating the trans..............at least until summer comes and I start hot lapping it at the dragstrip
