Default Changing Trans Fluid

When changing the trans fluid there is a little "O" shaped ring that sits up in the hole that the filter goes in. The instructions stated that it should be changed. For the life of me I could not get that O ring off so I left it on and just put the filter back in. Car has been running fine.

1) How do you guys get that ring out?
2) Is there any harm in not chaning it once?

Thanks.

Its a pain in the *** to get out...it comes out with a small screwdriver or chisel and a hammer. You gotta be very careful not to dig into the valvebody when you do it.Ive never had a problem not changing it.I do usually change it about every 3rd fluid change though.

Cool. Yeah, changing the trans fluid is a PITA anyway (still don't understand why there isn't a drain for the pan so that you don't have to take the pan off when it's full of fluid - makes a damn mess) so after messing with that O ring a few times I just said screw it. I will try and change it next time then.
Thanks for the reply.

You could always make a drain plug in the pan.I believe it was summit that i bought my drain plug kit from.

You mean they actually sell a plug kit specifically for the trans fluid pan? I would love to have that. Difficult to rig up? Do you remember any part numbers or anything?

I hope you didn't damage that filter seal. Otherwise you'll be sucking air not oil!

To get those o-rings out, we have a long S-shaped tool at the shop to hook the lip of the seal and then you can use a small hammer on the other end and she'll come right out.

When you say "lip of the seal" I am assuming you mean the upper lip, correct? So that when you use a hammer you are hitting the lower curve on the S which forces the O ring down, correct?
I will have to try and find something like that S shaped tool you have. Sounds like the way to go.
Thanks for the replies.

With a long thin screwdriver and a small hammer,
tap in one side of the filter seal (careful, don't nick the bore)
so it rotates inwards such that the other side now sticks out;
with needle nose pliers, grab the side that sticks out and pull down and out.

Or use a small slidehammer puller, don't nick the bore.

As for not making a mess, use a fluid pump to pump the ATF out thru the fill tube before dropping the pan.
