If this happened all at once, then it is most likely a stripped or broken governor gear.

I replaced the speed sensor in the rear of the tranny and the old one was covered with metal shavings. Where is the governor gear located? thanks phill

Sounds like a failure inside causing metal to circulate and making the governor stick. Seeing how the speed sensor was covered in shavings.
I'd drop the pan and check.

The govenor is under a cover just foward of the speed sensor. Remove the dome shaped cover and simply grab the govenor and pull it out. The gear is plastic and I have seen a few chewed up. If its bad just go get another one and slip it back in. Good luck.

Will it shift if you move it to manual second or manual third?
