Default New Tranny For A LS1 F-Body.

Hey has anybody on her done the gear vendors overdrive thing where it splits every gear? It would turn the 4L60e into an 8 speed. Or maybe retrofitted the new 6L80e into an F-body.

Just Wondering.

GV unit is expensive and adds weight. From a performance standpoint you will not recoup the investment and the 4L60's 4th gear is adequate for 4.10s in a daily driver unless you do a lot of highway cruising as part of your commute.

I'm not aware of where you could get the new six speed tranny at an affordable price.

No I thought the GV unit would be a performance improver because it splits each gear. 1st has and overdrive as does 2nd 3rd and 4th. This would lessen the gap between each gear and allow the driver to stay in there powerband more. And as much as I hate driving an automatic If i could get one like that I'd probably enjoy having all those different gears at my disposal.

The performance advantage of gear splitting is diminished greatly by a high stall converter. You could split 2nd gear but I doubt realistically that you would on a regular basis. You are looking at a big investment for manual control as you will probably want a manual valve body for the 4L60e.

If you have to buy an A4, get a good torque converter and tuning software. the converter cures most of the power drop problems on the upshift. Use the software to program more agressive part throttle shift points. This makes an A4 much more liveable.

The gear vendor works well, although I have yet to see whether it will last behind 1200hp...should see soon. It is a nice piece, I had some trans problems that kept me from getting to the track with it (totally non-GV related). TH400 with a GV will be a much stronger solution then the 4L60E. Manual gear splitting while driving is simple...the unit also comes with a box where it will automatically split when you hit a given speed. I'm not sure how a TH400 with GV compared weight wise with a 4L80E...my guess is they will be pretty close.
