Default 4L60 Trans info

We install a LS-1 and a 4L60E trans. into a 1968 chevy truck. Has anyone done this ? What we need to know is how to hookup the orginal speedo gauge. The 4L60E is electric and runs through the computer and the orginal 1968 speedo gauge works of a cable between the trans and dash. Any ideas ? Yes, I know we can change out the dash gauges to aftermarket electric ones, but rather not. Thanks

I think you can use a tailshaft from a 700R4? Not sure. If not, you can get ahold of Rossler, who can sell you a tailshaft housing with the speedo cable mount, and speedo gear to replace the VSS version. Just the opposite you'd need to do when converting to a TH350 like I did. If they swapped, I'd give you my TH350 cable driven housing, but they dont.

No a tail housing from a 700 won't work on a LS1 4l60e case. Time to go with an electrical set up.

I am assuming that you are installing an LS1 transmission, along with the LS1 motor, right? If so then it can only be electronic. If it is a non-LS1 transmission, then you can install gears, but will have to drill the output shaft to accept the speedo clip that holds the drive gear. You can use a 700R4 output shaft to get the dimensions for where to drill the hole. I hope this helps.

Sorry pro built if the trans is a LS1 or LT1 3 piece case with a 6 bolt tail, it aint going to work!
Only the early 4l60e(none removable bell) with a four bolt tail will work.

You are right if it is a 3 piece setup.

Default 4l60e

i dont know if you have already solved the problem but if you want to keep your mechanical gauges you can send your tailshaft to street and preformance and they will trade you for a tailshaft that will run your mechanical gauges. it may be kinda pricy though.

This is what you're looking for, too bad they are not a sponsor and I can't give you their name.
It's the first hit on google, with 4L60E speedo tailhousing (iirc).

There many companies that make an electronic drive for the mechanical speedometer head unit. You might check out Dakota guages or transmissioncenter.net
