Default top speed runs without shifting into 4th...

How is it possible to get a 3.23 to go 140+ (4th gear territory) without a WOT shift from 3->4? Can I just ease into the throttle so it doesn't downshift to 3?

Are you talking about a car without a tune?
Stock tuning on my 2002 3.23 camaro shows a wot 3-4 shift at 130 mph. And I've been there before.

i would say ease into it the best you can, these cars have amazing tq curves stock..you shouldn't have any trouble achieving 140mph climbing in OD..

I think he wants to avoid going into OD. If the car is shifting at 5500, you will go into 4th at 130 like 8a8mfh said. If you program the car to shift at 6000, you'll go into 4th at 142.

This site will help you out.

It sounds like he wants to get into 4th without going WOT. The problem is the paper clutches, they will wear out quickly and 3-4 will be gone due to excess heat and wear.

The 3-4 shift only applies the band, the clutches are already engaged.

..if you let OD engage at like 60 mph and slowly climb to 140+ you won't tear as much **** up, that's what i was suggesting...then maybe going WOT after like 130..

i don't know...my stalled automatic focuses on the first 100 mph, not the next..

Then why do I see constant threads where people burn their 3-4 clutch packs and people saying it's because they go WOT into OD or are in OD and do a WOT downshift into 2nd?

s346k is correct! He is trying to avoid the 3->4 shift, this is what kills parts ... the shock of high revving parts and then a gear (shift) change is the killer. He (mpe488) is asking if while in 4th gear, can he ease up to 140 MPH, with enough throttle to avoid the 4->3 downshift. The answer is yes, you can ease up the throttle in 4th gear and reach 140+ MPH.

Because (BASICALLY) 1-2 only applies the band, 3-4 only applies the band. 2-3 releases the band and applies the 3-4 clutch, if the 2-3 shift timing isn't perfect it'll do many things like keep the band applied too long causing a bind and burn the 3-4 clutches, or release the band too early causing a flare and burn the 3-4 clutches, etc. In other words the 3-4 clutch takes most of it's abuse from the 2-3 shift.
