Default How long to rear ends usually last for you guys?

Always hear about how the manual guys blow the rear ends at the drop of a hat...well my cam only 11.9 automatic did it. I was pulling 1.62 60s last year, but no more than maybe 8 passes like that.

New transmissoin (again) and converter this year (long, long story for that already), go to the track, and the tranny holds just long enough to take out the rear end.

Ouch.....I guess if your gonna go out, go out BIG! I have a buddy that ran a turbo on his A4 and stock rear end. It lasted all year long and he was running 10.90's and pushing over 500 at the wheels. He changed it out for a 9", but it was still working when he did that.

Ah, the ol' cherry bomb in the rear diff trick....you musta pist someone off!!

Seriously though, it really does seem like a crap shoot with these go-cart rearends we've been given. I've seen damage like yours and worse (sheared ring/pinion teeth) on a bolt-on car w/3800 stall and ET streets, but then I see people on here with power adders running 10's with big stalls & slicks with nothing more than a rear girdle and stud kit. We're all on borrowed time! Sounds like you've had an expensive spring so far......12 bolt time?

Yes, I have had an expensive spring. No, it's not 12 bolt time. Too much money. I need to get it driving again as it's 'my only car and daily driver, which means finding the cheapest functional ten bolt I can. Then I will not run it at the track again for awhile, not until I get a different car to drive. Between the transmission and rear end....

Then I, eventually, need a roll bar, TH400, 12 bolt and suspension before I can even think about adding more power.

In other words, no more racing or real modding for a long time.

look into getting an 8.5" 10 bolt. that is my plan when i smoke this factory piece. it would be cheaper than a 12 bolt/9" and considerably stronger than your 7.5". just a thought..

Where might I find one? What do they cost? Simple replacement or is something special required?

you can find one at almost any junkyard, but you might want to look into what cars (or trucks) to get them from, as with everything else there are "good" ones and "bad" ones. if you find time this weekend, i'd hit up a local racetrack and ask one of the bracket racers what they got their rear out of and what they did to it. you may not have the time to do it *this* time, but if you get another 7.5 10 bolt that breaks, maybe you can be prepared for *next* time.

i think it's a great alternative for an automatic, as i've seen many 8.5" 10 bolt cars in the 9s with [enter poweradder]. you'd retain the minimal hp loss through the rear, but still get something that will withstand the power. i'd look at the early 70s camaros or possibly 80s halfton trucks. only thing about a truck rear is that you may have to narrow it...sorry i can't provide a ton of info, i'm just trying to plant the seed that not every 10 bolt is junk and you CAN have a strong rear for less than $2k.

Alright, thanks, I'll keep that in mind for the future.
