Default Which stage, mods to 4l60-e to hold 600 rwhp?

Hey, well this winter before i get the turbo put on im going to build the trans. The car will hopefully have 450-500 rwhp and i dont want the tranny to hold me back. I would also like some room to grow if i up the boost. What should i have done to the 4l60-e to hold this power? Thanks!

Well, IMO the 4l60e won't hold up to that power for long, mine didn't and it was built as well. You may want to look in the direction of a 4L80E..

the swap parts plus trans is a lot to go that route correct? Same with th-400 swap and m6. Ill try building the a4 first, if it fails then ill upgrade, however, what upgrades/stage should i look into?

Not much more than a nicely built 4L60E!

I would look at every possible upgrade possible for a4l60e and 600 rwhp. Upgraded everything including billet input/output shafts.

I paid $2400 for my 4l60e built tranny and it's blown at a 550 rwhp/tq run at the drag strip. Would you want to build it up again just to see it blow up again? That was $2400 I lit a match to.

I went with a T56 swap after that (not cheap either) and I'm not happy with it at the track, fun on the street though. Now I'm doing a TH400 swap .

any rough estimate what a th350 or th400 swap costs for everything, all parts i mean, i will install myself. I dont do too much highway driving so i wouldnt mind not having overdrive

I'll throw this out there...I (Stroker/Nitrous), Cory H (Super charged H2, now awaiting a turbo), Ryan K (Turbo, 633 SAE rwhp), and Mark (Supercharged 402 stroker, 540 SAE rwhp) run built 4l60E's. We, so far (with one hell of alot of street driving and drag racing) haven't had a failure yet. That's not to say were not on the ragged edge but "Ellis" can build a hell of a street/strip tranny... We are all using the Z-packs as Ellis and I found through testing they seemed to hold up the best to both worlds(street/strip)...If just strip, I would use the Borg Warner pack! Pressure/volume and all the correct parts are what make these thing hold up...250psi is all that I would go without going to an aftermarket Billet pump (they are supposed to be good to 300psi, haven't actully seen one). Anyway, it can be done but for how long? After this season it will be interesting to pull apart the big HP combos and see how the trannys faired....I do know Ryans looked real good last Winter at 550ish rwhp and a full season of drag racing/street driving, at 633hp we'll have to wait and find out!!!!!!!

4L80E or th350 would be my suggestion. I wouldn't waste money trying to get a 4L60E to keep alive

And even with the th350/400, you can still have overdrive if you desire, just look at the Gear Vendor units (although they are a tad bit pricey)

Depending on the transmission you get built and how well you build it will determine how much it costs. I guestimate for a decent tranny with all the parts it would be around $3500ish for a TH400 conversion. My Rossler built TH400 was $2500 alone, so mine will probably be closer to $4300 by time it's finished.

A stock 4L80E is pretty stout and I imagine you could do the swap for around $2500, but I'm sorta guessing there.

jimbob, that's some good info. I am very surprised to see a 4L60E hold up to that abuse. I have seen so many of those things not last and I was a little dissapointed when mine blew. Sounds like there may be better parts out now, but I would still have a hard time buying another 4l60e even knowing that. Nitrous is what killed mine and I'm taking no chances this time.

that stage 5 is pretty stout, how does it get the 4l65-e name tho? To do this would i jsut ship you my trans and the price, you build and ship back? Is there any type of warranty you guys offer, Note: Car will be mainly street driven, track only as few passes a year. I really wish i could find a 4l60-e to build to save cash and not all the work and extra cash of a swap. The Speed Secrets looks really nice and i have heard well of FLT as well

I think this is how it works, correct me if im wrong. Also, whats the warranty if i took it to the track and the tranny just blew/did not hold or blew on the street/started to slip? Thanks!

Yeah, in the last few years these trannys have been able to hold the big power, reliably...even 2 or 3 years back I would not totally trust 600+rear hp combos for long....The sponsors on here have a very good reputation with big power.....

A couple questions Vince. Is that an actual 4l65E or a 60e w/ some 65e parts in it?
Do you sell just the parts as a kit? I have a friend who is pretty well known locally who could build it for me cheaply, and it would save the hassle of shipping and core charges etc...

Yes the unit generally starts as a 60 that we convert and add all the upgraded goodies. We will sell the parts as well!
