Default ss3800 results(coming from a PT4000)...

So, went to the track tonight with no exhaust after the y pipe(since it fell off yesterday, thanks to the previous owners great welding job). The car is slammed, 3.42's, full suspension, small cam, stock ported heads, 17" m/t dr's, untuned, around 3000 DA.

First pass no burnout(just wanted to make an easy first pass), soft launch and it BOGS, 1.82 60ft, 12.29 at 113.2.

Then I heated them up, launched off idle and just flashed it like I used to do with the pt4000 stall and it dead hooked and BOGGED again to a 1.66 60ft 11.92 at 113.6.

So I came around heated them up again and stalled it up about 2800(about as much as I could without pushing through brakes) and it BOGGED to a 1.66 60ft, 11.89 at 114.0.

So I tightened up the rear shocks 2 clicks and stalled it up again to about 2800 and it bogged again to a 1.64 60ft 11.94 at 114.0

I then tightned them up another click and it bogged again to 1.64 and went 11.85 at 115.0(car was a lot cooler this pass since it had been sitting for about an hour). This pass though at the top of 1st it spun HARD going into 2nd. I was all over the place.

All night I was having problems with my 1-2 shift(needs tuning) so I was barely lifting on it to keep it from hitting the limiter.

The car would dead hook and just bog down and go. I was running my front hals at 1 and a buddy of mine told me it pulled the front left off 17" wheel/tire the ground slightly. The rears I started out at 3 and ended up with them at 6. I was running 18lbs in the m/t dr's, and I didn't get to make anymore passes, but I think tightening up the suspension would've helped a little more.

I've ran a pt4400 before with a different setup and also the pt4000 with the same setup. The ss3800 just doesn't pull up top at all like the PT series does. Also I think the ss3800 is hitting the tires hard right off the hit, but isn't strong enough to keep pulling me to get the lower 60fts I'm looking for. With the pt4000 I would pull consistent 1.58-1.59 coming off idle and flashing it(it would dead hook also and almost bog), and only stalled it up once to about 2800 and pulled a 1.54 and pulled both 60lb zr1's and tires. I never stalled it up fully with the pt4000 and launched because I was afraid of breaking the 10 bolt since I didn't have my gears set in it yet and the old ones whined.

Best pass with the PT4000 was 11.39 at 117.7 with a 1.59 before a tune with lower shift points and in about 1800DA with a stock catback and running through a cutout.

As far as driveability, the ss3800 is A LOT tighter converter. Although the PT4000 and PT4400 never bothered me. From a roll though, say 45mph, the PT4000 pulls like a raped ape compared to the ss3800.

So far I'm not as happy with the ss3800 as I thought I was going to be. I switched to it in hopes of better hooking on the streets and so it would work better for the spray. On the streets I haven't got enough time with it yet, but so far it doesn't hook any better than the PT4000. I have a friend who just sent his pt4000 back to yank to be redone, so I think I'm going to have them make me a pt3800 so I can spray it.(thats why I went with the ss series originally) A guy on here had them do a pt3800 for this same reason, but I can't remember who.

Hopefully I can have the pt3800 in a few weeks to compare it to the ss3800 in similiar weather before the tune.

Looks like we'll be switching lol. I think it will be good for me since I drive mine a lot I think we will both be better off. What were you shift extensions? I know with the pt4000 i'd prob. get something like 5800. On my 346 setup I was getting 5300. So add about 400 rpm to what your shift extensions are now.

Great write-up.

I switched from the SS4000 to a PT4000 and could not be happier with the difference in pull up top.

I could not really hook the SS4k with Nitto's 100%,but i can feather the PT4k and match the best 60ft i got with my SS4000 without even trying (you know what i mean).

The SS4000 needed a good suspension and a soft side wall tire to work really well, both of which i do not have.
The PT4000 is way easier to launch and as said above, pulls MUCH better up top.

Now to just get some MPH out of my car and i will be happy.

Congrats,and good luck

Dave

spray that ss3800 and you will stop complaining about how that converter isnt as good as the pt series.

now strictly n/a its the best converter for the 4L60e bar none.

I know I'd be happy on the spray, but I don't want to have to be spraying the car all the time just to run with cars I used to be able to run with on motor.

I think the PT4000 is a 2.2 str. the 4400 is a 2.5 but check with Yank to be sure.

yes sir

has a lot to do with shift extensions. If you had a pt the shift extensions would be really high spraying.

Interesting you went from the PT4000 to the SS3800. I went from a TCI 3800 to the PT4000 and absolutely love it. I swear it feels tighter than the TCI. The main reason I switched to the PT series is because I wanted a converter that pulled better on the top end with a higher shift extension and hit slightly softer out of the hole with my new engine. So far so good. I love this converter.

I believe it has to do with anti-ballooning. With nitrous stall convertors tend to have soo much pressure they expand.... talk to John at Fuddle.

I've yet to hit the track with my SS3800 but i'm not nearly as heavily modded as you are, hopefully I get some decent results because I don't have the money to switch to something else. I went with the 3800 because I plan on getting LT's and a a cam at some time to match the converter.

Honestly if you've never been in a PT4000+ car then you'll probably love the converter.

I am very pleased with my SS4000. My best 60ft has been a 1.62, but it has done it three times, so I don't think it was a fluke. It also pulls all the way through the traps. I have no suspension mods or weight reduction either on stock 17 inch wheels and MT drag radials.
