Default Topping out w A4

I was running on the highway against a 6spd TA, and I happened to run upto 125@6000rpm, I didnt see the rpms drop and the trans didnt seem to be shifting any time soon. I decided to back off rather than tempt fate, it didnt seem like the tach was bouncing yet. Am I just not going into 4th at WOT or does it take longer? Or does the 4spd auto just happen to top out at 125?

The 4 speed auto does not top out at 125. Heck, ive had my lt1 auto past 125 and it was still accelerating farely well. What gear was it in? Was it in 3rd? Could be a number of things. More explanation I think is needed.

quick question, is there a speed limiter on those? my old truck (an 04 sierra) was governed at 100. no matter what you did, it wouldnt go pass 100. once i reprogrammed it, it would go further past it.

Sounds like the same problem I've had for awhile. From the info I've gotten on here, your 2-3 and 3-4 clutch packs are likely burnt up. Your car has 3.23s since it is a WS6. With my 2.73s It shifts to OD (4th) around 135 mph.

135?? More like 150-160 with 2.73 gears. I've been to 140 with 2.73s and was still in 3rd. Avalanche, where did you have the shifter in 3rd or D?

My car is programmed NOT to shift into OD at full throttle, but when it was stock it would go into OD at WOT no problem. If you can check your tune, then go from there.

on my dyno run .. My A4 went 145+mph with 3:23's. I've never tried top-end but I expect it's north of 145.

Top speed on these cars are 160+, probably around 165 or so, juding from the RPM's. I had the speddo peged a couple of times. By the way some of us live life more than a 1/4 mile at the time.

The 3-4 clutch pack is the first one to blow out, and WOT shifts into OD is one of if not the quickest way to trash the trans. I programmed it that way just in case I forgot. Safety measure.

I go into 4th at WOT every time I drag race.. not really much of a choice with 4.10 gears.

If you are conserned about parts braking at WOT, maybe you should not be racing. You can either have a race car or a street car. A mix of both is not to much fun, usually gets expensive, and a pain in the butt if you need a ride to work on Monday because you raced (broke) on Sunday.

The calculator was posted guys. With stock tires and 2.73's you top out 3rd gear at 168 mph. With 3.23's you top out 3rd gear at 142 mph. Those numbers should be very close to accurate give or take 5 mph.

Point is that you should have been nowhere near 6000 in 3rd gear @ 125 mph. However if you had 3.73's then 6000 rpm's in 3rd occurs at 123 mph. Are you the cars first owner? Perhaps the gears were upgraded and they "forgot" to mention it.

Not always true. Having a mix of both can be alot of fun and if built right could be relatively reliable But you do bring up a good point. If you can't afford to fix it or go without it for awhile then don't race it. But josh99ta's point was that 3/4 clutch pack is weak and not appropriate for racing. All the serious drag cars are 2 or 3 speeds usually anyway so they don't have a 4th gear to go into. They don't need it. Fourth gear is for better gas mileage. If the race hasn't ended by 142 or 168 mph then god help all of us

Of course with 3.73's and 4.10's it's a different story. But this is where you may need to run a bigger tire and spin the motor a little higher to get that extra 3rd gear pull.

But the bottom line is that you never want to go into 4th at WOT unless you actually like burning clutch packs and rebuilds

Keep doing 160+ runs and you'll be living your afterlife more then a quarter mile at a time
