Default Tranny Temperature Question?

I just installed my heads and cam package and put in a 4000 stall, shift kit,and a BM tranny cooler with a fan on it.I drove it in 98 degree weather today and it ran at 180 while cruising at 45mph but when I would stop and go it would go up to 205 and then come back down to 180 when I would get into over-drive.I live in TX is this normal temp or should it run cooler.Let me know?THanks

Sounds normal, tranny temps can get scary, well over 200 degs. and be fine. I've seen TH400's run at 260.

Little warm but not bad. I would invest in a moderate sized cooler.

Default Trans

The Tranny is a follower of the motor. If the motor is running hotter then the trans should to. If the trans is hot and the motor is cool something is not right.

I'm in Austin and see transmission temps between 150-205 typically.

(205* means I'm ragging it out on a 100+ day)

Make sure your cooler is mounted in a location where it can get some good airflow, even with a fan it needs to be in an area where theres good flow.
I run a TH400 with a 4K stall my sending unit is in the pan and my tranny temps have never gone over 170.
But heres the reason, I have removed the front bumper support and deleted the fog lights. I have no AC and the cooler is a B&M Hi Tek thats mounted to the radiator and I bypassed the radiator cooler. I get a straight shot of air right on the cooler from the fog light opening.
It works so well I have never installed the fan that came with the cooler.

The reported trans temp will depend on where you mount the temp sending unit. My friend has his mounted in the OEM location in the case and when we were datalogging his car with my EFIlive scanner there was a consistent 17 degree difference between the two readings (EFIlive was higher). WOT blast in hot weather will send the temp through the roof with a big stall.

You are ok, but if you want to improve this, go to Lubrication Engineers Monolec 7500. This will reduce the temps about 10-20 degrees, and offer much better lubrication, and a much better chance at a long transmission life. Do some research on this and you will see what I am saying is true.

Do you have the B&M and stock trans coolers both hooked up?

If you have both hooked up the fluid should go into the radiator/stock transmission cooler first, then the B&M afterwards.

The Radiator operating temp is usually 210* so if you flow through the B&M first, it will drop the fluid temp, then when it hits the radiator/stock transmission cooler, it will actually heat up the temps back up to around 210*.

This is why it's supposed to go stock/radiator, then aftermarket cooler, so the aftermarket can further cool the temps.

As you have seen many people recommend bypassing the radiator/stock transmission cooler completely and running only the B&M.

If you do bypass the stock cooler, please post up your results.

As stated before, you also need to make sure that where you mounted your B&M it gets good airflow.

If Your Coolant Is Running Hotter Than 180's Then Try Circumventing The Stock Cooler And Just Using Aftermarket Tranny Coolers This Made A 30 Deg Difference In My Tranny Temps

But I Wanna Add My Coolat Temps Like To Stay In The Low 200's After The H\c Swap So I Figured The Radiator Was Actually Heating My Fluid And It Proved To Be True

What's the P/N on the cooler w/ fan? Where'd you get it from?
