Manual shifting with an Auto
So I got a 2001 z28 and I was wondering what would be the best rpms to shift from first gear to 2nd and then to drive. Thanks a lot in advance.

you can manually upshift for fun, it's not all that bad for your tranny, but racing leave it in D. you won't be able to outshift the computer.
just try not to ever manually downshift. if you need to, do it with your foot OFF the gas. don't try to rpm-match an auto. you'll just put power on top of the clutches = bad bad bad.

nah, it's all in how you do it. giving it almost no throttle and running it up to 6 grand isn't good, but if you do it sensibly, it's not gonna hurt anything (like half throttle and shifting at 4 grand).
think about it: a lot of automatic cars these days are being optioned with modes to allow you to manually shift it. you're doing the same thing with those cars as us manually controlling the lever. it was put there for a reason - in case we need more low end (climbing hills, towing, etc...), we can hold the gears lower and longer for more torque. it's not gonna hurt anything with responsible use. it's downshifting that kills.
i just had this conversation on saturday with my friend's dad. i was hanging out at his shop (he flushed my coolant and gave me a new t-stat and some brillo pads to clean my exhaust tips) and he was talking about a new GTP he just bought. he was talking about it having a mode to manually shift it. i asked him his opinion on me manually shifting. he is WELL AWARE of the downfalls of the 4L60E - he's been a mechanic for 40+ years. according to him, manually UPshifting an auto is fine, the lever was put there for a reason. i tend to side with a guy who's been fixing cars for 40 years
