torque converter poll
in your honest opinion do the pro's outweigh the cons when it comes to a stalled a4? i kno it's an easy way to cut significant time off of an auto's 1/4 time, but it also seems that it would put more wear and tear on the engine and be less suitable for daily driving. do you think it's worth getting or not? thanks for your o-pinions

It's not nearly as bad as you think.
Driving around in Traffic the converter is only unlocked at very low speeds, or when accelerating with traffic from a dead stop. Depending on your tune your converter will lock-up at a desired speed and behave 100% like stock. (This takes roughly 10 seconds from a stop light, with traffic)

The lower stalls are a win-win, 3000 and under. No cons whatsoever. The stock converter is too tight for the LSX powerband. I do feel you start getting into compromises the higher the stall goes.

A converter will NOT put more wear and tear on the engine. How you drive, oil change frequency and how high you spin the motor are the main factors that will affect a motors wear and tear.
A converter will however put a little more wear and tear on the transmission. But this is why people use transmission coolers. Heat is the number one killer of the 4L60E. A $50 24K GVM tranny cooler will help protect your investment.
A 3000 stall is absolutely PERFECT for a car that is street driven and has no plans for any major mods in the future. However, if you do feel that someday you might get a cam or heads and cam then I would recommend a 3600 stall. That is big enough not to hurt most off the shelf cams, good for N20 and still small enough to make it street freindly.
I would buy a stall with a tranny cooler and put them in ASAP. The car becomes alot more fun to drive. As far as fun factor goes if you don't have a stick then a converter is the next best thing
Good luck with whatever you decide.

i aprecciate all the responses guys. the poll pretty much speaks for itself which is what i was hoping for. since i'll probly be getting some lt's/ory sometime in the future i think i'll end up going with a 3200 stall. how hard is a tranny cooler to install if i do it myself since i'm pretty sure i'll be needing one? thanks again for your help.

Transmission coolers are actually not that difficult to install. The converter on the other hand is a pain in the butt because you have to remove the transmission. I paid New Era Performance $325 to install my converter & tranny cooler. Might want to shop around and see what kind of a deal you can get locally.

I'm actually from Joliet, IL (just south of Chicago). After 14 years with the same computer company they shut thier doors so I ended up taking a job offer out here in Rochester, NY two years ago. I live in Brighton now which I'm sure you know is not far at all from pittsford.
Good luck.

I have a precision industries 3400 stall. Funny thing is I think its more streetable. Especially if im caught in the rain, since I can give it a little bit of gas atleast when taking off without hitting my torque. I wish it was a 3800 or 4000 stall. At 3400 its still very very streetable. You should have fun and should like it.

Not really harder on the engine... it will rev faster because the new stall muliplies more power blah blah blah, but in terms of RPMS thats up to you.
It is however harder on the tranny/driveline ( aka rear ).
If youre driveline is stock, it should be ok for a long time, really depends on how you drive the car, but a Tranny Cooler wouldn't hurt.
And a DD stall shouldn't change your mileage much. 2-4 at the most.

I DD a Yank PT 4400 and it is awesome!! From a stop and from a roll. I used to have a 2800 but then I went to a 4400 and it drives like a completly diffrent car. At WOT you get thrown in your seat. Now racing a 6 speed is much more fun because they usually wind up looking at my taillights
