Default Driving in 3rd

I have an A4 ws6. Can I drive in 3rd around town? Even wot take offs? It fells way more peppy in 3rd. It does kickdown right away when I let off the gas.

Do most of you guys drive in 3rd instead of overdrive? Why do camaros have drive and overdrive? TA's just have the 1 2 3 and D. Any reason for this?

cause 3 is D and D is OD. just cause it doesnt say OD doesnt mean they dont have it.

Yes its fine to drive around in D ,And I have people say that all the time when Im explaining something I say drive they say they dont have drive or i say 3rd and they say they have drive lol

I've driven around town in 2nd before, bad on gas, but its mean as hell on acceleration from a roll. Cant really do it much anymore because its getting cold enough that i'll lose grip. Just keep an eye on your RPMs and dont let them get too high and you'll be fine. Also keep an eye on your temp. Selecting a lower gear than overdrive keeps the RPMs up higher(obviously) and the engine will run a little warmer.

yeah, i drive in D all day long. OD is just easier on gas and engine temps!!

So when I'm in 3rd or d why does it kickdown when I let off the gas? It doesn't do in od. Just lookin' to educate myself here.

It dosent really kick down . Rather what happens is when you are in od there is no overrun similar to how the petals woork on a 10 speed or like a ratchet the trans pulls under throttle but more or less free wheels when coasting (no drag down) this is due to the input sprag ,When in the d position though its more like the older 350 or 400 feel since the overrun clutch comes on and efeectivly eliminates that free wheel by locking the two parts of the sprag forard clutch and overrun side causing the drag down .

Are you saying that when in 3rd gear (with gear lever in manual 3rd position), you release the throttle and the trans downshifts 3-2...?

That isn't the correct behaviour.

Do you see the RPM jump up...?
Do you see engine braking while it's in 2nd...?
Or do you see slipping...?
Or are you seeing the TCC release or apply...?

What do you mean "kickdown"....?
Kickdown is defined as WOT downshift resulting from pushing throttle wide open.

The trans is supposed to do a Part Throttle downshift 3-2 when you sufficiently increase the throttle, and it is supposed to do a WOT 3-2 downshift ("kickdown") when you open the throttle 100% (all provided that the MPH and RPM is below the maximum allowed for 2nd gear).

If you're already in 3rd (with manual 3rd selected), and you release the throttle, it should stay in 3rd.

If you're in 2nd (with manual 3rd selected), and you release the throttle, it should upshift 2-3 (provided MPH above the PT 2-3 shift table).

If you're in 3rd (with overdrive selected), and you release the throttle, it should upshift 3-4 (provided MPH is above the PT 3-4 shift table).

I be leave what he means is the vehicle slows or overuns because the overrun clutch is on , not so much a downshift as you can feel the car decelerate against th engine like a manual without the clutch depressed at 0 throttle

I only use 3rd at the track, may be in my head, but it seems it holds the gear longer, I dunno. 3rd around town? Not for me.

Ok sorry, yes it feels like the car slows down when I let off the gas, when in d or manual 3. I thought it was downshifting. Sorry about my definition. I lost 20 cool points. I just wanted to make sure I can drive in manual 3 or drive ariund town. Whichever one gives me moe power or better take offs. Or whatever more takeoff I can get crusing after 30mph.

I don't know if you can or can't do it but I always do. Under 40 or so, around town stuff. In fact when I come off a freeway I will pull it into D on the off ramp.
First thing I do when starting out is flick off that DSR switch and drop it into D. I have the Camaro so OD is a D with an O around it.
If it hurts it, good. I still have 2 1/2 years and 20k on the warranty.

I use D or 3 on all surface streets because the car goes into lockup at a lower RPM on my tune which keeps the tranny temps down. On the highway I use OD though.

There's a big difference from d (3) to overdrive. I've never diven the car in d, just over drive. It's probably not even use to it.

is it okay to shift from D to OD while moving? Say i go from a roll in D and really get her up there, is it hard on the tranny to shift her into OD?

To shift into 4th at WOT you will need to be moving around 130mph or more depending on your shift points. Are you really going that fast on the street?

from my experience you DON'T want to shift to OD at wot. the stock shift tables will not even allow it unless altered, and i've heard the transmission cannot take it.

It will do it, whoever told you otherwise is wrong. You are correct that it is not good for it though. Too many people lost their transmissions after doing that.
