Default That noise is a cracked flexplate

I had the same thing and had to change flexplates. As long as I had to change, I figured I would step up to a 3600 Vigilante. A good move to be sure!

Default check starter

my blazer was doin same thing . i thought it was flexplate also.i started tear down and noticed the starter gear was loose. there is a spring that holds this gear in after engine is started.mine was broke, and the gear was randomly moving out and touching the flexplate. i replaced starter havent heard noise since.talked to a friend at local dealership he said its a common problem on all newer gms

you can also check the clutch for the ac. mine makes all kinds of noise, if i rev the motor a little bit it goes away. Another way to check it is when you hear the noise, turn on your ac and see if it goes away...

Mine only made noise on start up and slow speeds and it was a cracked stock flex plate. Changed em and have had no problems.

If you've changed converters you might want to check the bolts that hold the converter to the flywheel. Ive seen them barely back out resulting with the head of the bolt scraping the block making some weird noise's at idle and a little above.

Donno if you have ever had an exhaust hanger break and rattle against your piping but it sounds kinda like that, at least mine did just when it was started.

I broke (real bad cracks .. from each bolt hole to the welded starter ring) the one in my truck once. It sounded like a rod knock to all who listen to it. It would only make the noise when it didn't have a load on it (in gear with some torque in the drive train). By putting it in gear it would quiet down some .. add more gas it completely went away.

If you've never heard a rod "knock" or spun rod bearing "tap" .... it's a metalic sound (tap or knock) that you can tell is coming from inside the engine. If you pay close attention to the frequency .. it should help you isolate 1 of 8 or more in line with the RPM.

I cracked another one (but not nearly as bad) and didn't even know it was cracked until I swapped the motor out.

Hope that helps

Does it sound anything like an exhaust tick? I thought I had an exhaust tick, but when I took it to mienake, they said it sounded like it was aw metal tapping coming from insode the engine. This was with the car above us on a lift.
