Default Compare and Contrast 4l60E and 4l80E

Okay i'm making 650 rwhp and cutting 1.4 60's footbraking a 4l60e. I am VERY nervous about my transmission everytime i'm at the track. Long story short, I want a transbrake - I see Rossler can supply one with a 4l80E. I also understand the 4l80e weighs more and robs some hp? I have a TH400 ready to go in my garage; however, I don't want to give up OD. The ONLY reason I have to not use the TH400. So given my situation what are the pros and cons about a 4L80E for my use??

I love my 4l80. The weight was a factor but in my case I could always turn up the boost.

4l80 vs 4l60 wieght won't be such a drastic thing once you get the 80lb converter off the trans. The factory converters are big heavy power robbing pigs. the differnce HP consumption wise between the 4l60 and 4l80 is 32hp for the 4l60 and 43hp for the 4l80e. At you power level it should be nominal. Just make sure to get a reputably built 4l80e from a good transmission rebuilder.

Thanks for the considerate answers folks. So what's the deal with transbrakes and 4l80e trans. I didn't even think there was one until reading GMHighTech performance article recently.

No they are not but Rossler Transmission Does make a Transbrake for the 80e.

Thank you. Well looking over Yank.cc I see references only to the 4L80e for trucks. So what do we do for a converter on a 4l80e...FWIW I use a Yank SS3600 and like it...i'd consider the equiv to a 4000 or 4200 for my car (runs healty dose of n20 at track). I'll call Yank but any input is welcome.

I have a Yank in my car for the 4l80. It is a badass converter. Call Dave!!! He will hook you up. You dont even need to run a crank spacer. The converter fit perfrect! And saved my 100 + because I didnt have to buy a crank spacer.

Yank can build an equvalient converter for the 4l80e no problem.

Same here, running a pro YANK 3400. No spacer required, Its a custom made 4l80e converter made to bolt to the LS1 flywheel..

I would suggest contacting Yank as I am not extremly Familiar with the Fbody 4l80e Swap. either Yank or Gearstar would know exactly what was involved. I am very familiar with both transmissions but there are differnces. there is an extra Speed sensor for the input shaft on the 4l80 and there is some differnce in the selenoid setup as well.

Heres a list of what I bought to get mine to work:

2002 4l80e out of a GMC seirra (spelling)
Master rebuild kit, red eagle clutches
yank custom made 4l80e converter (3400)
yank cross member (torque are mount is on the crossmember instead of trans)
TH400 slip yoke (there are about 3-4 different ones depending on the output shaft)
4l80e dip stick tube
Speartech 4l60e-4l80e wiring harness
Dust cover
4l80eTrans mount
Sent my .BIN file to HPtuners and had it modified

I think thats about it. If I think of anything else Ill post it up..

Yep, thats what yank does. They make the 4l80e converter fit the stock 4l60e flywheel. I know Vigilante also makes a converter for this swap. Fuddle did also but they are out of the question.
