I'm trying to determine whether or not I should upgrade my rear. I know that as an automatic we have a slight advantage over the M6 guys who seem to snap these things left and right. What kind of setups do you have and how have they held up?

IMO, unless you break it, don't replace it. The M6s put far more shock on the diff than A4s. Just my opinion.

i wouldnt worry too much on it unless your leaving HARD on m/t's or stickier. its rare to see a broken 10 bolt on an auto with average tires/nittos. most everything ive seen with a broken ten bolt is a m6, a geared m6 is the most dangerous imo

I never broke my 10 bolt, but went with a Strange 12 bolt because I was upping the power and wanted piece of mind when I launch...So far its been in a bit over a year and about 75 11 second runs with 1.55 60's...and 5000 street miles and its held up fine...The gears are a wee bit noisier than I'd like, but we are going with 4.10s anyway so hopefully we will quiet it down...

Not replacing it until its broken. It is not cheap at all. Unlike the transmission (which has many things you can upgrade) I wouldn't spend the money until its busted.

My stock 10 bolt has an Eaton posi, and a T/A girdle. It's held up pretty well so far to many 1.52-1.55 60" times.

Good responses. I guess I will save my extra $1800.00 and put 3:73's in the 10 bolt. I do plan on leaving somewhat hard on M/T drag radials this year. I hope she holds up!

I would upgrade the diff. too if I were you. You can find good deals on Eaton posi units if you shop around. FYI they are MORE expensive at Summit/Jegs.

I was thinking about doing the same for the future. Spoke to Jason at Extreme (shop here in OK, they did most of my work) he suggested if I do anything to do axles and a girdle if i do gears. He said the stock 98 is actually a decent posi and to not replace it unless it brakes. I think with the stock rear you'll be just fine add hardened axles, and a girdle and your GOOD.

I changed mine to another 10 bolt from a M6 car just for the better gearing of the 3.42.

Yeah that's a good idea, I wonder how cheap you could get away with that...

Mind sending me a PM about what was involved and what you can expect to pay?

I still have a stock rear I went 10.78 on it with a 1.46 60ft an also other 11 second passes. I think what will help is using a soft side wall tire. I use et streets the slick type. The et street drag radials have a stiffer side wall which wont flex as much as an et street slick type and might lead to an easier death to the stock 10 bolt. I would also recommend to preload alittle on the launch. Im hoping my 10 bolt lasts through another season im probobly going to put et drags on with prostars.
