Default 4l60e losing fluid.

What would cause a 4l60e to keep pumping fluid out the vent tube on top? My tranny has twice now pumped fluid out the vent to the point I don't have enough and it starts slipping while driving. I can put more back in in and it runs fine. It does this over a long period of time, like 6 months before it gets down low enough to start slipping. I know I should check it more often, but... Thanks for the help.

fuild out the vent is a sign of overheating what kind of cooler do you have .A bad converter can cause that also. additionally if it started this after a rebuild and is only small amounts someone may have used and early 700r4 pump gasket which will cause a continuous but small leak from vent at higher rpm.
one thing you can do that will help in either case is put a rubber hose on it and direct to a high place well above the trans it wont fix a spew from over heating but if its a case of wrong gasket or the tab on the gasket has just come off it will solve the slow leak problem

Thanks, This is a 96 S10 Blazer with 142,000 miles, no rebuild. It did this starting about a year ago. I've added fluid a couple times and it lasts about six months. No other signs of leaks anywhere else. Just the vent hose onto the exhaust. Makes for a smoky ride sometimes. Runs fine when fluid is topped off though.
