Default Life of stock tranny

I might be buying this LS1 with close to 100k on the clock. Owner said the car has never been raced and is completely stock besides the exhaust and lid.

Should i be looking for a transmission rebuild? I'd hope not to or even a engine rebuild!

4L60E is an excellent auto trans for stock to mild bolt-on cars. They need to be beefed up if you plan on major mods/high rpm operation though.

However, at 100k there is no telling how much longer it might last. If it was properly maintained and fluid temps were kept under ~200-210 for the majority of the trans' life, it might go another 30k miles. Maybe more. But if it was neglected all it's life, it could break any time now.

At 100k, anything is a possibility not knowing exactly how the car/trans has been cared for all those miles.

IMO, any time you buy any used car with 100k miles, you need to budget some money to fix some stuff, just in case.

I don't believe it was never raced, why the lid/exhaust then? My tranny gave out right at 100k, you will be rebuilding it no matter what. Your rear end I wouldn't worry about, I have 400 RWHP and 150k on the stock rear, your engine should be just fine, the tranny is another story though. Sorry, but you should expect to have to rebuild it.

$1200-2500 depending on your goals and future plans with the car.

I just sold a 99 B4C LS1 with 120k on the tranny. It was used by the FBI and the car was stock. I say it all depends how the vehicle was driven, maintained etc. Its a tough call just buy the car and drive it until it falls apart
