Well a solenoid is possible but I would scan it first , However they are relativly easy to replace and not very expensive , 26 to 45 dollars average ,
The reason I say have it scanned is 1st gear is both solenoids on 2nd happens when one goes off, third happens when both are of and 4th one comes back on ,Are you sure its not actually starting in second and missing first, That would make more sense for a solenoid .I would definatly get a scan before I spent money,

unfortunatly yes because if you scanned it now it would set a code for everything in the transmission, take the pan of first and see whats in there, Curious why did you remove the transmission are you doing some other work to the car that required it?

you cant scan it alone thats why it cant be done outside of car , now you could run it on a trans dyno to figure it out if you could find someone close who has one

hey performa.. i got that nissan back on the road other day shifts good 1-2-3-4 and R.. when ur on it from 70-75 it will make a slight grinding noise but if your drivnig it how your suppose to drive a nissan it shifts flawlessly

On the noids in the 4L60E we replaced 1 of them when we rebuilt my tranny (wouldnt shift 1-2) what does the other one control im sure it will come along sooner or later

not sure what to tell you on the noise unless you got a dif shim on the wrong side or mssing in the nissan , but glad you got it going I would say drive normally lol.
On the solenoids for the 4l60e its a bit more complicated
1= both on
2=1 on and 1 off
3=both off
4= the other on on and 1 off

but the other solenoid is called the 2-3 or shift solenoid B usually I suggest replacing them as a pair but if your working good don't worry about it .Solenoids are generally either good or bad regardless of age I have seen perfect ones with 200000 miles and bad ones with 50 miles.
glad you got everything working and hoo rahh on the Nissan most experienced builders hate those . And as allways holler anytime you need something.

well i pulled the tranny out to just replace it but i need to sell the other tranny and stall i have first (you know how women are when it comes to cars) and then i thought it might just be a seleniod...can a regular tranny shop decide if a seleniod is toast?

If you can get them to test it they probably could make some determination on it
