a stall is when the car actually moves at a certain RPM depending on variables? it's like launching with a stickshift car kind of!

A stall is a torque converter with a higher stall speed...

this allows the engine to rev higher (to get into it's torque range) before coupling is reached...

this gives you a quicker launch and prevents the engine dropping out of its torque band when shifting into each next gear.
