Default How many are still using the stock flexplate??

I am getting a new trans/converter combo and I am wondering if I need to get a new flewplate. It was replaced about 20K miles ago under warranty, but I don't want to have to pull the trans again any time soon for anything.

what kind of aftermarket flexplates are out there and which go on without any grinding boltholes or anything.

thanks

I do.

I wouldn't worry about it. For the price it costs all you will get is an SFI certification which most people don't need. I never even hear of them breaking. Especially considering yours only has 20k miles on it. Most guys here have 50k, 100k or more on their original.

Its actually common to see cracks around the bolt holes and cracked flywheels in general on 01-02 flexplates. Mine cracked at 50K and my buddies 02 cracked his at 30K.. both on stock tranny, stock stall, mine with 2.73's his with 3.23's.

I saw a 2001 with the cracked Plate also.

I just picked up a 98 style for $70, Might as well do it while it's out.

What does the 98 flex plate look like? I almost think that the dealership might have put that on in my car when they replaced it. I remember a friend of mine looking at the plate when I had the trans out the first time. He was saying something about wishing that he had a plate like mine. I wasn't listening too much, I had trans fluid in my damn mouth..................how can I tell the difference?

Try a search on this site for pics. I know someone posted side by side pics a long time ago. I've seen both, but it's been a while since I've seen the '01-'02 plate, but there is a noticeable visual difference. I seem to remember the holes looking different, like a different shape or something.

If you have a stock '98-'00 plate, I would just leave it. They are stronger than the '01-'02 model.

The 98 flexplate may be stronger than the later year plates, but still not as strong as the TCI or Meziere flexplates. Both are billet, SFI certified and very stout. I thought my 98 was fine until I developed a horrible knocking noise that turned out to be the converter bolt holes stretched out (see pic below). So I bought a "perfect" used 98 flexplate from a member here and it also had stretched holes. They were not as bad as the pic below, but certainly bad enough that I would not install it. So I bought a TCI. My friend had a 98 that was running mid 11's and his plate eventually developed stress cracks around the crank bolt holes. He also switched to a TCI (he convinced me to switched after his problem). To each their own, but just be careful.

That is ia link to the pics of both the '98-'00 and the '01+.

'98-'00 is on the left, the one with the round holes.

Correct. '98-'00 are all the same. '01+ are the newer (weaker) style.

Thanks, I have the 98-00 even though my car is a 2002. When they replaced it under warranty, they put the good one in.

The 98 should have two different converter patterns. PM me how much you want for it.
