Default a4 93Z question, plz help me out

i know the obvious thing to do is to put your car in second and hit it and shift to drive. But when i do it feels a lot less torquey than when i just leave it in D. It seems that i get a much bigger jump when i leave it in drive with the loss of a little throttle response. Is this just my imagination?

Is this the car you were talking about that only has down to 2 on the shifter (instead of having 1)? I know that seems silly to ask, but is is still going into second when you leave it in drive? Or are you going slow enough that it hits first?
