Default 93 z28 a4, 2 different auto trannys?

I own 2 93 z28s. One has a shifter that reads:

P
R
N
OD
D
2

the other one has a first a gear. Whats the difference.

also, my transmission guy that worked on my car that has the shifter that starts with 2, said that the tranny is a 700r4. I know it is similar to the 4l60e, but is that the difference. Did the early 93s have the 700r. Just wondering.

They are both actually 700r4 transmissions , 4l60 is just the other name , The 93 was unique in a couple ways electronically and there were a couple of valve body changes, As for the shifter this I have seen it does not change the trans or the fact is has four gears, But for some reason on some units and in most police applications 1st gear was locked out and this also was the case in some 4L60E transmissions as some had a stopper that would not allow the selection of first gear.. In these units the stopper can simply be removed, In the case of cars that dont have the position like yours it may be nessesary to modify the shifter gate to allow shift down to first but it is still possible .
The 4L60E didnt start in cars until 1994 , And was available in some trucks in 1993. Though there may be some odd production models that are exceptions I am not aware of

cars with 2.73 rear ends did not have the manual 1st gear availible(easily fixed by grinding a tab off at the shifter gate)

the reason for this is when they did there drive by emmision/noise level to speed ratio the 2.73 cars couldnt pass in first gear so they made the shifter only go to 2nd gear as the lowest manually selected gear

So how does the 700r4 compare to the 4l60e in durability and stuff like that? I'm curious because I'm getting ready to go look at a 93 on sunday.

Well they are pretty much the same ones electronically controlled and the other is hydraulics , but internally strength wise and build wise they are nearly identical .

Does that mean there is any difference in performance between being hydaulically and electonically shifted?
