Default changing 4L60E filter grommet is a biotch

So changing my yukon's filter I didn't have this tool last week to change the grommet and I just popped a new filter in there with a mobil1 dex3 fluid and it's running fine. It's only a few years old -- the rubber seemed pliable and in good condition. I supposed the 2002 TA would not be the same.

In the parts store I picked up this seal puller with the transam filter. The grommet is WAY the heck up there and I put a very small gouge in the aluminum hole removing it. It took an 18mm socket to drive the new grommet up there and get it squared away.

The guys at Autozone said I should be able to pull the grommet out with my finger or that it would fall out. either my 4L60E has had so many heat cycles that the grommet metal bonded to the tranny or the counter boys are much stronger than I.

Any other tricks or tools to remove/replace in the future?

A rule of thumb is, if you put the new filter in the old grommet and it stays without falling out, then re-use it. Those things never go bad. The only time I ever replace one is when I build a transmission. They are usually fine.

I fu**** with my seal on my T/a for about an hour trying to pull it out.
What worked for me was I actually drove the seal up with a small punch and it folded the seal and it fell right out .Next time I will leave it in.
