Default Converter noise?

I have been hearing kind of a whine/howling coming from my car. I can't pin point if it is the rear end or if it may be the trans/converter. I have a Midwest 3500 stall in it. The car drives great and the rear end seems to be great as well. Nothing noticeable at all. I think I have read that some converters make noise. Is this true?

I am thinking that it is the rear end but just want to figure out if it could possibly be the converter before I have the rear end looked at.

If it's at light throttle like on-ramps and overpasses, it may be
the converter clutch slipping and wanting some tuning to
harden up the apply rather than a soft lockup w/ starved line.
If it's happening when not (supposed to be) locked up that
would be another sort of problem though.

Does the whine/howling change pitch/volume with road speed or with engine RPM?

It seems to be loadest when I am in town at slower speeds. That it when it sounds like it is come from the back of the car. On highway speed it sounds like the front and isn't quite as loud as in town. It does seem to get loader however when I am stopping from highway speeds.

Well, sounds like the rearend making noise on deceleration. You could take the differential cover off and have a look arround. If the magnet has alot of metal stuck to it I'd say that would be your problem. It's rare for a convertor to make a whining/howling noise. The transmission's pump on the other hand can whine/howl if the filter is clogged and starving it of fluid or if some debris has gone through the pump itself and damaged it.

Thanks for the help. I am thinking it is the rear end. I will check the magnet and see about the metal shavings.
