Default trans has a growling sound..trans experts please

..I get this growling sound from the trans when the rpms drop below 1500 and the trans does not automatically shift into a lower gear..I have had to manually shift to a lower gear to get rid of the sound..Car has a vig. 3,600 stall with a 3.23..do you think I need to go to a 3.73 to keep the rpms up a few hundred and is this sound coming from the lock-up? Thanks

Let me ask this question. Do you always have to manual down shift your trans to get it to return to 1st gear when coming to a stop? Also you asked if we thought it could be the lockup. Have you put a scan tool on your car to verify if the tcc is engauged when this noise occurs? What years is the car and some other info will probably help. Vince

It downshifts fine some of the time but I notice as my engine temp rises to the middle line (210?) this issue starts. the car is a 2001. have not put a scan tool on car. car runs great on highway, great at the track (1.60 60')..just around town at low rpms this occurs. I try to drive in 3rd most of the time around town but even then it happens. I shift from drive to 3rd when it makes the sound and then I shift from 3rd to drive when it occurs again to bring the rpms up to above 1500 and all is ok

Have you had any tuning done? You might want to raise the lock up function in your tune.
