Yeah, skydrol is nasty... not good with Viton and just ok with NBR seals. EPDM typically...

It's really a personal preference and you'll get a hundred different thoughts on it, but Type F transfluid has no friction modifiers where as Dex fluids do have friction modifiers to aid in a smoother shift. Most racers want a firm solid shift and type F delivers in that department. It's also common to mix Type F and Dex fluids for a happy medium. There is no right or wrong here really, but drivetrain slip reduction keeps me happy

Well this new transmission shifts way hard enough lol. I went with Gastrol Dex. So far is has helped. But that was only about 5 quarts worth. I think it took 12 qtrs. What would happen it it had to much fluid? Would it build up to much pressure...or just puke it out of the tube?

I'm not sure what kind of functional issues it might cause from being over filled, but it'll definitely expand when hot and puke out the vent tube. That will not only make a mess, but it could get under the back tires and wreak havoc.

i know some of the guys around here use tractor fluid, i thought the reason was it was less flamable, in case of an explosion, but maybe im wrong
when i built my old switch/pitch turbo 400, the guy that built the converter
gave me a couple diff brands of tractor fluid to use, but i never did
years ago, Ford used the type F fluid for some v/b control, where sup. GM used diff mach in the v/b, and lighter fluid, but years ago most guys used F fluid in the trans-at one time there was a mismatch of fluids/seals not being compatable
i just use dex in my 4L80E, it has no problem getting a shift, lol

Depending on your combination, you many or may not notice a stall speed difference with tractor fluid. You will however, have a noticeable loss in transmission operating temperature with tractor fluid. There is really no down side to tractor fluid, as long as your transmission is set up to use it.

Yeah my transmission guy told me too, said it makes them run 30 degrees cooler....

While not new to us we have bean running John Deere HYGAURD in the turbo cars as it will take the heat without foaming or breaking down much better than atf. Sythetic air compressor oil also works well to. This is common practice in turbo cars that take a lot of time to spool.

Default good tuning tool

It works, it has to meet a minimum rating for C4 allison fluid. Depending on how hot the combo is anywhere from 200 to 450 rpm drop in stall speeds. I use it as a tool, like if I missed the converter by a touch, the fluid brings me back in so I know when that converter comes out, what needs to be done. Popular brands are john deere hy-guard (has to be hi viscosity), citgo torque fluid, cat drivetrain oil, mobil lube 424. I've been liking travelers premium tractor drivetrain oil (any tractor supply) cause you can get it anywhere and it works.

But a word of caution: dacron filter elements (4L60-E typical) hate tractor oil. Can't get it thru the filter. Like someone breathing thru a straw, and then some smart *** pinches off the straw.

always thought on electronically controlled transmissions (newer stuff) that running anything other then dex 6 would cause issues?

Damn, a 10 year old thread was revived earlier this week, now this one is brought back from the deep archives. Something in the air lately?

It's usually a newb that does this, but AINT SKEERED has been around forever.

lol i know this is an old thread but this brings up an intriguing question for me, does the low viscosity of dexron 6 make it shift soft? and does it play a factor in the stall speed being unusually high on my converter.

I just put new scarf cut sealing rings on my th400 about a month ago (blew the cast ones out ) I was originally running a 50 50 mixture of Dex and type f. On this build I am running 90% Hygsrd and one quart of type f to give it a bit of color so I can read it on my shitty lokar dip stick.

I can't say if it has tightened the converter any because I haven't put it up on the t brake yet but my trans has been running 25 degrees cooler in even hotter weather then I was running in when I was using the 50 50 mix. All runs were evenly spaced out.

Tractor hydraulic fluid usually comes in weights such as aw32, aw46, and aw68 depending on the temperature range it is being used in and is usually clear in color much like some power steering fluids. They also make what is called trans-hydralic fluid and is basically the same as dextron 3 just in larger bulk amounts and sold at many farm and fleet type of stores.
