Default tranny issues???

so my friend brought there grand prix over so i could take a look over it. i drove it around the block and it feels like there achor attached to the car, the only way i could really explain how it feel would be like a boost leak. i floor it and it has little power, kinda picks up from 3-4k and will not go past 4k and starts to make a clicking sound and falls on its face. i changed the fuel filter, no effect, also checked for vac. leaks, nothing??? idk what going on, cloged cat?? the car wont go past 60-70 now. i dont know where to go from here, any takers?

If the RPM's are not climbing with no increase in MPH meaning slipping trans, I would have to say that you have a engine drivability issue. Cats might be a good thing to check. Might even try to loosen the exhaust up and see if it makes a difference.

Yes that sounds more like a running issue than a trans issue if the RPM wont go over 4k I would check the cat and the fuel filter also ,

Maf can have that affect along with restricted CAT, Curious can you rev the engine in neutral past 4000 ?

My girlfriend has a 99 grand prix gtp and it wont rev past 4 either in neutral. It sounds like its hitting the rev limiter. When its in gear it will go all the way to redline with no problem.

Hmm I am not familiar with how the red line is set up in neutral and park It is possible that there are different setting in those positions

car wont go over 4k when it is not in gear? does this have to do with the problem or a set rev limiter.

Does it sound like its skipping if so that may be the rev limiter but if it sounds like its just tops out or is strained its some other issue with the engine /fuel/exhaust etc based on all you have said I think you have a running problem not a trans issue

I used to drive a jeep. I'm pretty satisfied with the performance of its Jeep fuel filter. And it had never been my problem. But with my LS1, I just felt that I already have to change its fuel filter, it's not working well.

i'm a tech at a GM dealer, i see cloged convetrers more than once a week. you can pull the O2 sensor out before the cat and hook a pressure gauge to it. it shouldn't go any higher than 5 psi. i have only seen one transmission issue that sounds like you are talking about and it had black fluid and the worst burnt fluid smell, i'm talking worse than a normal toasted transmission. clutchs were welded together and everything.

just an FYI to everyone that doesn't know the redline is 4k in park and netural and higher in a directional gear somewhere 6-7k i beleave.
