Buying a used converter? Good Idea?
I'm pondering whether or not to buy a used converter off of a member on this site. I know that there are some aftermarket parts that you should just buy new and not buy used, is a torque converter one of them? It's a used Vig 3600 that's been in the car for a while. He's been cutting consistent 1.6 60's with it on drag radials and full race weight, which sounds alot better than my 2.0 and 2.1's. He's asking $350 for it. Which I like considering a brand new one from either Yank or Vigilante is in the $700 range. I don't mind paying for one new and having the piece of mind about what shape it's in, but I also wouldn't mind saving $450. That would pay for the tune. What do you guys think?

I'd spring for the new one if it were me... I have bought a used Vig before and it ended up biting me in the ***. It went and took out my FLT trans with it. and in the end costed 2X's more than just buying a new one to begin with.
-IMO, just dont do it and save yourself the hassle.

I too dont like the used converter idea we have had a couple people use them ourselves and had not good results , Plus converters at least good ones are generally custom built to the aplication they are being used in. So while it may act one way in his car it may do something completely different in yours .

I traded a member on here my PY3400 for his PT4000 and have been running it without incident for the past couple of years. I drag race my car and have been doing so without incident, converter related wise, ever since I got the PT4000. Maybe I got lucky??? I have rebuilt my tranny a couple of times since the install but since I drag race as much as I do it's a good idea IMO to rebuild the tranny every season anyhow.

I wouldn't recommend it but I bought a vig2800 almost 8 years ago and have had zero problems. If you get a good enough deal maybe send it to Vig and have them go through it. I was told if you can see it in person to spill out some of the fluid in it and run a magnet through it and see if you find any large metal particles. Stay away if you do. Other than that, not much you can do.

I know what you mean about buying used, but the peace of mind of having a warranty is what would make me buy new.
And just to keep the metaphors going...
Its kinda like dating a girl who has slept with your friends. Yeah, you're havin fun and she's hot and all, but who knows what kind of damage they laid on her.
