Default Is this 3/4 clutch right?

With this setup the clearance is .028. Are the steels in the right place?

I have not measured them. The three on top are a little bigger than the bottom four.

Does it matter which way they go? Like bigger on bottom or top?

I prefer to use the thicker steels near the thinest backing plate in this case the top

What makes the 3/4 clutch pack burn up? What can be done to make it hold up better?

By looking at the picture I'm wondering if you are going to get all those plates in the drum. I think by looking at it you are only going to use 8 frictions and 7 steels. I could be wrong but with the thickness of the pressure and apply plates you will never get all 9 frictions in the drum. I believe that you have different thickness steels to adjust the over all clutch pack clearance. Also it appares as you have two different thickness frictions as well. Just my 2 cents. Vince

Thats a good point , I didnt really look at what they appeared to be since he said he had a .28 clearance I assumed he had allready measured them in the drum,

Have you actually allready installed them in the drum and gotten that clearance?

Sorry I missed this part of the post. The pressure plate looks pretty thin and I guess with a thin 3-4 clutch snap ring, it might fit. You do have it stacked up correctly. I would double check with your parts supplier about the amount of plates to be used and also the correct suggested clutch clearance, if you have not already done so. Vince

Yes they all fit in the drum. Do you think this setup will hold up or do I need to change something?

I think you will be fine I would put the thicker steels towards the top though to help with bowing possibility

Theory says that the thickest should go near the top, but from from taking apart hundreds of 700R4/4L60E transmissions, and reading how the 3-4 clutches and steels wear, the opposite seems to be true. I would use the thickest steels near the bottom, as these are the first ones to apply, and "see" the most heat.

I would agree if the stepped plate set up likes in the 700R4 or if the thinnest backing plate was on the bottom like alot of set ups are. But generally as a rule I always went with thickest steels toward thinnest end or backing /apply plates since they are more likley to bow
