Shifter Rattle

Shifter Rattle I've had an extremely annoying intermittent rattle in my console for several years. After having my upper console off upwards of a dozen times, packing insulation everywhere, installing a leather boot, removing the little indicator, etc., etc., I finally diagnosed that it's coming from the shifter mechanism itself, not the console. It's a loud tap, and I can create it by vibrating or moving the shift lever in certain ways. The thing is, it's not coming from any of the visible moving parts. I spent hours monkeying with the thing today and I can't find the exact source.
Anyone have any experience with this? It is driving me nuts. I'd buy and install an aftermarket shifter in a minute to get rid of this if they made one for our cars. Thanks for any help.

im curious to see what you guys have to say. i have the same exact problem in my car and it is soo annoying but it wont quit. although mine only does it at certain tiems. not a tranny problem either. its done it with 4 trannies.
