Default yup

Stick a small thin screwdriver into the pump and center the drive gear.
They have a habit of falling out of position.

You will notice 2 lugs. The convertor must fit onto them.

Then do a small lift and drop with the transmission on it's end.

This is provided you have the correct convertor.

should just go right in while you spin and push. at least all the ones i have done just spun right on.

Mine was a bastard to get on, worst part of the whole swap. I spent two hours spinning and pushing but didn't want to push too hard & damage the pump.....it just wouldn't seat. Finally quadruple checked that everything was lined up with the pump and shoved it in HARD. It went right in. Apparently the o-rings on the input shaft of some trannies are a tighter fit than others.

One more thought for you. Assuming it is a lock up, you can pull the o'ring off the transmission input shaft, be carefull not to damage it, then try to stab the converter. If it goes on smoothly, then the converter is a little tight on the o'ring. If the converter will still not stab, then there might be a burr or something wrong in the converter.

More details though:
Was the transmission touched, rebuilt etc...
Does the old converter still stab on ok.
What knid of transmission is it.
Are you sure you have the right converter, LT1 & LS1 are different.

Chris... I am going to recommend that you load up the tranny and take it to a tranny shop in your area... have those guys take a look to verify that you have the right converter.

Because you have not called in a week or so I assumed you had it back together... sorry to see you struggling so much with it.

I would agree with all of the above advise. The part that scares me is after two hours of playing with it, the bushing in the pump has to be damaged. I have seen these get messed up in a matter of minutes when a guy did not know how to correctly install a converter. Take it to a shop and have it inspected as mentioned above.
