Default An idea for a cheap overdrive?

Alright, so I've been planning out my next build, an eighth mile car and have run across a seriously problem - basically I don't want to have to cruise down the freeway at 3600 RPM's going 55 miles an hour. (5.56 rear end)

And I sure as hell don't want to spend $2500 on a %22 gear vender.

Dual transfer cases are cheap, plentiful, and many will bolt right up to a th400.

The only problem is, they would shorten my final drive even more. An NP205 is 1:2. So I would end up with a 11.12 rear end. (Yikes!)

But what if I were to put something ridiculously tall in the rear, say 2.73's?

So when I'm driving around in "4 High" (It's going to be only rear wheel drive) I'll have 2.73's. And when I put it in "4 Low" I'll have 5.46's!

These transfer cases can be had for a less than 200 bucks and are pretty much bulletproof..

What do you guys think? Would this work?

transfer case won't work due to 4 low is not going to be able to stand up to the speed that you'll be running.

4 Low won't stand up to 85 miles per hour? Well damn.

I'm a little disappointed there.

I agree but read and article and someone actually did it lol. Somthing to do with super low ratio auto for rockclimbing but bet you could make a crap load of different gearings with it lol. Just when you ask it reminded me I saw that lol
