Default What can I do with Mercon V?

Someone gave me a case of Valvoline Mercon V. I noticed on the back it says it can be used in applications requiring Dexron 3.
I have a 4L80E and a T56, can I use this in either or should I pass it along and give the case to someone else?

Its backwards compatable according to GM and we have customers running it without incident in our units if that answers your question

What does backwards compatable mean, that it's not as good as dexron 3?
