TH400 Bellhousing Question
Ok I don't know much about these TH400 transmissions but have been looking into getting one. I found one that has a fixed bellhousing for a LT1. I however have a LS1. I was wondering if they made a adapter to make it fit? Has anyone ever seen one of them and if so where could I get one? Please school me haha.

I forgot the company that has an LS1 bellhousing that allows you to mount a th400 with all eight factory bolts. I requires you cut the th400 bellhousing off. I think they used to be a sponsor but aren't anymore, not sure.
Most people just get an th400 converter with a LS1 crank pilot, or use a flexplate spacer for the regular th400 converter crank pilot.
But this will mean using five engine to trans bolts, I guess it works alot of people do it, same with th350's.

??? All Chevy th400s have the same bellhousing, you dont need an adapter to bolt them to an ls1. You just wont use middle passenger side bolt. You will need a crank pilot adapter(if your using a non ls1 converter), but not a bellhousing adapter.

Ok thank you I don't know anything at all about automatic transmission. Just a question for you. I see in your sig that you went from a TH400 to a T56 and now to a 4L80E. Can I ask why?

Th400s are great for staying together and holding power, but not so great when you drive 20 miles on the interstate to work everyday. I got tired of filling up with gas every other day. T-56's are great on the highway and from a roll...but with a 408 you cant launch it without smoking the tires. But a 4l80e has the strength of a 400, plus overdrive. In my opinion the best of both worlds.

I was just letting him know there is a bellhousing available that adapts an LS1 to a th400 properly.
FWIW if I was doing the swap I'd use a regular th400 bellhousing and drill and tap holes in it to use the lower section of an LSX 4L80E bellhousing (The thick aluminum dust cover)that also bolts to the engine.

You don't NEED an adapter. But you do lose three mountng bolts if you just bolt it up.

On a 4l80e you cant run a dust cover (in an f-body) you have to trim the ears off to clear your headers.

Whats this then.
YEAH it's a th400 WITH A FORD BELLHOUSING!!! can you believe it!!
I don't remember who makes it Rossler maybe.
And BTW the aftermarket has made removeable bellhousings for th400's and other transmissions for a very long time.

I don't understand why people use adapters and spacers and such to make the flexplate fit a stock style TH400 converter. Since you have to buy a converter anyway why not just tell the builder of the converter that you'll be putting the TH400 behind an LS1 and they can build the converter to fit with a stock LS1 flexplate. I know Precision Industries can build them that way and I'm sure any reputable converter company can also.

Well the three th400/ls1 set ups i've installed never used anything other than a converter with a longer pilot... so ..... you probably know more than I do??

CNC is just a fancy word for cutting it off.
No one said anything about HP numbers.
It all depends on how right you want to do it.
