Unhappy Need a 4L80E built. I think????

Any suggestions on who to build my 4L80E? I think it is slipping in 3rd gear. It is like it searches for the gear. Full of fluid and it looks good. Doesn't smell burnt. Is there anything I can check without sending it to be built? Should the converter be checked if there is a problem with the transmission? It is a new Vigilante. If it has to be built, I would like to get it done in the North Georgia area or around Atlanta. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

SBP

I'm not so certain that it is an internal problem SBP. Can you elaborate on the symptoms a little better.

The car seems to shift fine. But in 3rd gear, it feels like it may be slipping. Or like it doesn't have enough line pressure to hold it in 3rd gear. It also takes longer to shift into 4th gear. If you manually shift the car it seems to do fine if you are on the gas a little harder than normal driving.

Ok thanks, let's start with the most recent change. You stated that you installed a new Vig converter.... what was the old converter stalling to and what is the new converter stalling to?

Well I didn't install it. It was in the car like it is when I bought it. It was supposed to be a Rossler built transmission. After calling him about the problem, I discovered that it isn't. His transmissions are painted black and this one isn't. When I drive the car and it goes into 3rd gear it will pull fine and then it is like it slips and then pull agian and ETC.

Thanks,

About the change. It has a TCI stand alone for the tranny. It was fine when I first got it but was a little aggressive for street driving. So I made a few changes to the shift parameters, upshift RPM and downshift RPM. Now this. I don't remember what it was all set at when I got it or I could try and go back to where it was and see what happens.

Thanks,

My builder John and I were discussing these symptoms a while ago... his first impression was this is a control problem. After your last comment... I believe it is a programming issue.

Let's start with the current MPH settings... where are they.

Who can I talk to to help me setup the shift points and line pressure and all? Maybe it is trying to go in and out of overdrive? Maybe I have the shift points to close? Not sure if I have it setup like it should be or not. It does seem to do fine if you manually shift the car and drive it a little harder.

What are the part throttle shift parameters... all of those numbers look pretty good.

I will have to check again. How do I change the Part Throttle Parameters? It shows them on a graph. But not sure on how to change them. I will try and read in the manual. But don't recall a specific on that.

Thanks,

Well... unfortunately the TCI module is one of the few I have not learned yet, just have not been asked to get involved with one. If you can send me a link to some online info I might be of some assistance.

Anyone else?

Vince, you ever tweaked a stand alone TCI 4l80E controller before?

Anyone else want to take a stab at this? I am willing to try a little bit of anything. I am praying it is nothing more than the way I have it setup. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Criss

No link online to tuning for the TCI box?

I'll spend some time hunting for it myself here in a bit.

I appreciate it. I can get the Part Throttle Parameteres if needed. Let me know if you find something or if anyone else has had this problem.

Thanks,

The fluid is clean as can be. Even though it is clean, could it still be 3rd gear clutch failure? Or what else could it be if the tuning on it is fine and the fluid is clean? Is there anything else I can check or do to help narrow it down? Or just drive it until it totally fails? Really don't want it to completely take a **** and end up buying a rebuild kit and hard parts. Has anyone else not had this type of problem?

Thanks,
SBP

Well think about it. The problem only showed up after the shift parameters were changed, or at least that is my understanding. So, based on that, I doubt seriously the direct clutches are compromised.

I have not had time to look for that info online. I will try to make the time tomorrow afternoon.

That is true. I am going to try a few things today. See what happens. If you happen to find anything, let me know. I appreciate you trying to help. I can't believe nobody else has this problem. Or knows anything else I could try.

Thanks,
