Default Tune PCM to make converter lock in 3rd?

Hey guys,
Just had a quick question off the top of my head. I have two cars. One is obviously an LS1 equipped Camaro with the 4L60E, and the other a 1988 Pontiac 6000 2.8 with the 440-T4 trans. I noticed that the 440-T4 trans locks up the converter in 3rd when you are just cruising on a backroad at speeds from 35-45 give or take just so that you get better fuel economy when cruising at steady speeds below overdrive. Can the 4L60E be programmed to do this? Does it even have the ability to do this? I just ask because I like the feature of locking up in 3rd when driving my beater.

With tuning software, you can do pretty much whatever you want. I tuned mine to lock up in 3rd gear at 37mph, and 4th gear at 52mph.

Nice, I was hoping to do something like that. Its just nice to hit the gas when you are in third and not have the rpms jump up due to the converter being unlocked, then the car starts downshifting when you give it less gas and it doesnt know what gear to go in because its in that speed range where you use many different throttle positions.

My 2002 was factory programmed to lock up in third.
It locks up in third, then unlocks, shifts to fourth and locks back up.
When I put the transgo kit in it the lock up was more firm and annoying so I used HPTuners to make it lock up in 4th only.

It should be easy to do if you find someone with the programming abilities.

The 4L60E was indeed originally programmed to lock up in 3rd gear. Not a big deal at all... 3 speed trannies were built as lock up units for years!

It really can be a preference thing so to speak. Some folks want to have 3rd gear lock up, some do not. For testing purposes we will sometimes inhibit 3rd gear lock up until we determine the info we are looking for.

Lock up is one of those features that can be tuned to suit the combination and suit the drivers taste.

Hope that helps.

Actually 3rd gear locked up is not a higher ratio than 4th.

3rd gear is simply a direct 1:1 gear ratio, and when the converter is locked up then the crankshaft is locked to the input shaft of the transmission, no hydraulic coupling.

4th gear is actually a 0.68 : 1 gear ratio... or overdriven! meaning the output shaft is spinning faster than the input shaft.

Hope that helps.

Yea I can drop my trans into "D" and it will lock up, but if for some reason i get cruising at 60 mph I am at +/-2400 rpms while locked, and i have to move the shifter to OD (which I really dont like to do because i hear that it may be bad for the car while moving).
