Default Street driven Powerglide users....

For all you guys running a glide in your setup and driving them on the street, how do you like it? I've got a really good deal lined up on a fully built glide for my turbo setup but im planning on driving the car on the street often. I've never owned or driven a car with one so im curious as to how the car acts on the street with it?

Is it totally impractical for regular street use? What rear ratio's are you running?

I've been wishing for a three-speed ever since I got my '68
El Camino with El 'Glide. The peakier your motor the less you
will like it on the street. Though maybe a better than stock
converter would ease the pain, on a higher revving motor.

It's chug or wail, take your pick, kind of driving.

I haven't driven mine a whole lot on the srteet but what little bit that I have was fine. Mine has a 3800 stall and 3.55's so it cruises along pretty good.

The car is a 396 turbo setup so it shouldn't be a complete dog even on the motor. I'm planning on a 355ish rear gear so I dont think it will be that bad really. Guess we'll just have to see.

My car has a 3.73/28" tires and a 1.76PG/3000 stall. It's no different than driving around a 3 speed setup. It's like starting in second gear and if you have a lot of power, even "2nd" gear is going to blow the tires away.

This 3000 stall used to be a 5000 stall and even that was driveable. Cruising at 45mph is roughly 2300rpm...70mph is close to 3000-3100rpm roughly.Very cool racing from 60+mph...theres no point in downshifting, just lay into it until redline. If you do 3.55 gears, it will be even tamer. BUT...you need a ton of power to get the car moving from a dead dig. My 500+hp engine is a complete dog with this setup. to the tune of 2.0 60 foots. But when I spray 200hp...it flashes the converter to 4000/4500 and it goes 1.4's in the 60'. Would it be a tenth or so faster with a 3 speed? YES. For now I dig it. Makes for an easier launch on a small tire also.

@ 3200-3500lbs:

500hp? Do a 3 speed
700hp? You could try a PG but 3 speed wil be quicker in the 60'
1000hp? I'd vote PG for sure.

just my opinion.

Well, if I am going with something other then the PG it will be a Rodney built 4l60. I hated the 3 speed in the last TA. Car slowed down horrible in the 60 ft switching to the TH350. Going from a 306 first gear to a 255 first gear made the car a complete dog on the motor. Was still slower on the spray as well. This PG has a 188 first gear.

I am going to set the car up for the strip for the most part anyway. I wasn't expecting the driveability to be great, just acceptable.

Car will make in excess of 800whp but will weigh around 3400lbs with me in it.

I love mine but a 315/60 15s and 3.73 1.81 first and a tight converter is great

Good luck getting a 4L60 to hold up behind 800hp as for the glide I would say go for it if the car was 3000# or less with a real loose converter. Might want to look into a 4L80 or TH400 for those HP numbers...

Just my 2 cents...

I've seen/worked on several cars with Rodney built 4l60's in them making more power then this car will make. They have had good luck so I have faith in his ability. I can't say enough good stuff about him.
