Default Clunk & Vibration Trans problem?

I have a 98 Trans Am That when I bought it on e-bay (Got ripped off ) it has a loud clunk when shifting from 1st to 2nd , like a hammer hitting the floor. If I start out easyily no clunk. If I start out modertly 1 clunk. If I get on it hard its like a lot of hammer hits in rapid succession. It also has a vibration from about 48 MPH to 60 MPH, whitch gets worse when put in neutral while driving. The output shaft has about .020 to .030 rotational back lash in it.Could this be my problem? The trans has Trans Go shift kit and a 2800 stall converter. The reason I am thinking trans is I just did the rear ( Auburn Posi, Moser axles, UMI lower arms panard bar and torq. arm ) and am still getting the noise and vibration.

Did it have the noise prior to installing the components you listed?

The backlash you are feeling is probably the parking pawl.

Look at the exhaust for witness marks from the driveshaft. How does the Trans. mount look? What mounts does it have on the engine and tranny?

Noise hs been there since i have had it. I Changed the trans mount with another stock mount, engine mounts are stock as far as I know. They seem to be O.K. visually.

The exhaust look good dosen't seem tobe that close. I even put some sponges around the exhaust and it made no difference.

Looks to be plenty of clearance when car is jacked up by housing and weight on suspension. Bushing is new UMI urethane.

Ok urethane bushings are bad to transfer vibration, They are stonger but thats the trade off. I would still have to say its going to be somewhere in that area, The vibration may just be from the poly mount or mounts, the clunk thump sound though about has to be mount or clearance related. As mentioned I would check over all the mounts engine/trans/rear carefully
